Other Notes: --There was a good bit of dirt blown in with the wind around March 22 and again on March 30 and April 04, leaving a substantial dirt layer on top of the old crust, near the surface, and in between. --The avalanche just past Gothic which runs out of the cirque caused havoc with the river. Though it looked the same from the surface, it turns out that when the slide damned the river and blocked water flow, the snowpack started to settle down into what was the river before the water slimmed down. Then once the water worked it's way through the snow damn there was no place for it to go so it went above as well as below the old snow/ice ceiling. So from top down it was snow, above slush, above a slow moving lake of water, above a heavy layer of ice, above the old river and river bottom. It took a week for this to melt back out to a more normal flow. ---At sunset Dec. 27 it has been clear or partly cloudy only 2 of the previous 25 days. --There was 306 cm (120") of snow this December. This is the 2nd December in a row to go over 100". December averages 56" of snow. --September was the 8th September in the past 35 with no snow for the month.
Ski and Road Conditions June 30. Skiing is over with for the year.
This information is on the quality of skiing but does not represent the safety in doing so. Check on avalanche conditions before skiing in back country areas.
The road to Gothic is open. The snowplug at Schofield Pass has been plowed open.
Current Avalanche Conditions
June 30: Avalanche activity is over with for the winter. ---Overall a very slide free winter. -There was a good bit of slide activity up Copper Creek the last week of December with three size 3's and a very large size 5 slide that ran out of a south facing gully on the back side of the end of Virginia Basin. This crossed the river and went through the tress on the other side passing the road. The run-out zoned fanned out for probably 1000 feet or more.
This information is for the immediate area around Gothic, though may be similar to other valleys in the area. There may however be differences so for a better evaluation of the general area go to the Crested Butte Avalanche Center.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is an excellent source of state wide weather and avalanche information.

In April of 1921, Albert Einstein visited the United States for the first time. His international celebrity was growing as scientists around the world began to understand and accept the vast implications of his theories of special and general relativity. He attended this annual meeting (of the NAS), and after sitting through a series of long speeches by others, he reportedly said, “I have just got a new theory of eternity.”
