Anatomy of an avalanche

The starting zone is where the fracture of an avalanche breaks - the weak point in the snow pack. This can be triggered by weak snow or stress such as windloading, a skier or a machine.
The track is the section of the slide path where the snow gathers speed and mass.
Another view of the slide track which covers all the open space between the trees.
The runout, where the snow decelerates and stops
A slide on Gothic Mountain. Noice the powder cloud in the center as the snow moves along.
Another avalanche in progress with a plume of airborn snow as the pressure of the slide produces an air blast.
Slide running out of the cirque on Gothic Mountain and fanning out in the runout zone.
Debris from the slide damned the river and crossed to the other side of the valley.
