Monday: clear, cool and calm early but warming nicely to the mid 40's- the warmest temperature since mid November.  Tuesday: clear and cool early but turning fast as we reach another new high of 2010 as it reaches up to the high 40's. Wednesday: partly cloudy with high, thin clouds and cool but warming to freezing by mid morning and then back into the upper 40's.  Still, snowpack is slow to melt except southern exposures. Thursday: partly cloudy and mild with a light breeze at mid day and increasing clouds early afternoon.  Clouds slow to build but mostly cloudy by late afternoon and windy.  Another warm day with high upper 40's but also little snow melt.

Gothic Weather Forecast:  Clear for another day before more clouds late week and through the weekend, but warmer.  --Friday cloudy and cooler with the low in the upper teens and high upper 20's with light to moderate snow.  Saturday cloudy and cooler with the low in the low teens and high upper 20's with light snow early in the day.  Some late day clearing.  Sunday clear but colder early with the low in the single digits but warming to around 40F.

Other Notes:  As of sunset March 11 it has snowed in 42 of the previous 54 days. It has been clear or partly cloudy only 8 days in the previous 58. This streak may end soon with the possible change in weather.  --This year December's low temperatures were 10F colder than 2008 and high's were 5F colder, but then last year it was cloudy all month so there was less radiant heat loss.  --The average snowfall for November is 142 cm (56").  This year's November had 68 cm (27").  --The average snowfall for October is 66 cm (26"), but this year there was 108 cm (42½").

Ski and Road Conditions  March 13. Skiing is so-so, with a surface crust, but not too bad in the afternoon as the surface gets soft.  North facing slopes are the best place to ski for snow. There is a broken trail to Gothic that is hard packed and wide- easy but not good skiing.

This information is on the quality of skiing but does not represent the safety in doing so. Check on avalanche conditions before skiing in back country areas.

The road to Gothic is closed.  The use of motorized vehicles in this valley is prohibited.

Current Avalanche Conditions

For an evaluation of the general area avalanche conditions go to the Crested Butte Avalanche Center.

In April of 1921, Albert Einstein visited the United States for the first time. His international celebrity was growing as scientists around the world began to understand and accept the vast implications of his theories of special and general relativity. He attended this annual meeting (of the NAS), and after sitting through a series of long speeches by others, he reportedly said, “I have just got a new theory of eternity.”
