Monday: clear for a while during the night, then turning mostly cloudy while staying warm.  Cloudy with light rain not long after sunrise before some late morning clearing with little warming at all during the day as the high does not make it out of the 50's. Tuesday: clearing during the night but then turning cloudy and warming after midnight with a brief, light rain before sunrise and then again shortly after.  Then mostly cloudy through the rest of the morning, turning partly cloudy in the afternoon. Wednesday: clear and much cooler as it drops to just below freezing for the first time in nearly two months.  Then clear, windy and mild through the day.

Gothic Weather Forecast:  Clear, windy and warming through the week.

Other Notes:  The first 4 days of April were just one inch short of the total snowfall for all of March. ---Average snowfall for April is 132 cm (52").  As of sunset April 07 there had been 96 cm (38").  ---At sunset March 11 it had snowed in 42 of the previous 54 days. It had been clear or partly cloudy on only 8 days in the previous 58.  --This year December's low temperatures were 10F colder than 2008 and high's were 5F colder, but then last year it was cloudy all month so there was less radiant heat loss.

Ski and Road Conditions  August 18. Skiing is done for the year.  Take a break- it is almost winter anyway.

This information is on the quality of skiing but does not represent the safety in doing so. Check on avalanche conditions before skiing in back country areas.

The road to Gothic is open.

Current Avalanche Conditions

August 20.  Both avalanche centers are closed for the summer.   There is no avalanche hazard.

For an evaluation of the general area avalanche conditions go to the Crested Butte Avalanche Center.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is an excellent source of state wide weather and avalanche information. Click here to see pictures of actual avalanches and some descriptions of ''the anatomy of an avalanche''.

In April of 1921, Albert Einstein visited the United States for the first time. His international celebrity was growing as scientists around the world began to understand and accept the vast implications of his theories of special and general relativity. He attended this annual meeting (of the NAS), and after sitting through a series of long speeches by others, he reportedly said, “I have just got a new theory of eternity.”
