SUMMARY:Douglass Distinguished Lecture 2026: Does Science Matter?
DESCRIPTION:“In this age of mass extinction\, does science matter or should we have a Fosters?” with Drs. Shahid Naeem and Sara Tjossem. \nJoin Columbia University ecologists and conservation biologists Shahid Naeem and Sara Tjossem for an evening exploring the vital role of science in shaping environmental policy and conservation. Tjossem\, a RMBL alumna\, focuses on the history of science\, the intersection of science and society\, and how science informs social movements and policy. Dr. Naeem’s research is conservation-focused\, with an emphasis on understanding the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function. \nThe program will begin with a conversation led by Tjossem about why science matters in environmental policy\, followed by Naeem’s exploration of biodiversity conservation as an example.
